Microplastics – The danger of very little things
Microplastics was one of the key topics being discussed at the IWTO Wool Round Table ono 7-8 December 2017 in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
There were two aspects discussed in particular. On the one hand, the wool industry needs to undertake research on how wool sheds during washing and how these microfibres then biodegrade in water.
On the other hand, we need to take part in the scientific discussions on how to account for microplastics when it comes to evaluating the environmental impact different fibres have on the planet. This is important to ensure that synthetic fibres are being made accountable for the plastic pollution that comes from synthetic clothing while also taking the benefits of natural fibres in this regard into account.
In November 2017, I held a speech about Microplastics at my local Toastmasters club. I thought it would be a good opportunity to share my speech as a general introduction to the topic of Microplastics.
